Equinoctial Alignment at Mnajdra: A Choreography of Recurrence
At Mnajdra the light is not welcomed;
It is invited. Calibrated.
At the equinox
the threshold admits the sun:
a measured blade
sliding between uprights,
across the worn sill,
into the inner apse.
Design, not accident.
Orthostats bear five millennia.
Coralline breathes salt.
The corbelled roofing, long collapsed,
persists in suggestion.
She stands where illumination narrows,
where the floor inclines
toward libation holes dark with conjecture.
When the beam reaches the altar, she moves.
Bare feet trace the curvature of the apse.
Her palms skim spiral and bovine relief…
Tarxien’s insistences:
muscle and flank pressing outward from stone.
Across the ridge, Ħaġar Qim keeps watch
above the filament of sea.
Between temples… wind.
Outside the portal, the tethered animal strains,
sensing alteration in the air.
Frame drum. Bone rattle.
Pulse answering pulse.
She turns in deliberate revolutions,
mapping architecture onto muscle.
Temple as body; body as enclosure.
Within the apsidal embrace she becomes axial,
a provisional omphalos
on an island long practised
in centrality and invasion alike.
The blade rises. A brief arc interrupts the morning.
Blood meets stone, seeking carved depressions
their function debated
their gravity undisputed.
She lowers with the offering.
not collapsed, but complete.
Behind her the rite dilates, tilts.
She releases a sound older than speech.
—
The island accrues syntax.
Phoenician keel.
Latin road.
Roman order.
She gathers another sequence:
exordium.
divisio.
confirmatio.
confutatio.
peroratio.
Rhetoric as containment.
Logos disciplines the vernal surge.
Memoria curates what must not surface.
She recites within an orthostat mind,
stacking terms like dressed blocks,
constructing an interior corbel against collapse.
Cornu fractures air. Buccina answers.
Lyre threads civility through vibration.
Yet beneath dispositio, the earlier rhythm persists.
—
Paris. 1913.
A theatre replaces the forecourt;
gaslight supplants dawn.
The bassoon ascends—
nasal, insistent, improper.
Bodies bend against classical line.
Feet strike earth instead of aspiring.
The audience recoils.
She knows this geometry:
angular, percussive, deliberately archaic.
What scandalises one century is recurrence in another.
She feels again the apse’s curvature,
the weight of orthostat shadow,
anticipation pooled in stone cavities.
Prehistory does not recede; it rearticulates.
In every era, there is a figure who bears excess…
once reclining in clay, abdomen ample,
eyes closed not in sleep, but in inwardness…
and another who must rise to dance it.
The circle resolves
as sunlight finds its seam in stone.
And she cries out.
Not scandal,
Not ecstasy…
Recognition.
