(Re-)Visiting the Mediterranean short story competition 2025
As part of a project co-funded by the European Union, the Department of English at the University of Malta held a short story competition in 2025 for post-secondary students aged 16 to 18 on the theme Life in the Mediterranean.
Entries were judged on originality, relevance to the theme, use of language, style and overall impact by a panel drawn from the Erasmus-funded RE-MED project at the Department of English, ANTAE and the Department of English Student Association. One winning entry and two runners-up were chosen, the winner receiving a 150 euro voucher from Agenda bookshop and the runners-up 50 euro vouchers, presented in June at the department’s annual symposium on the Valletta campus.
First place went to Pearl Z. Armeni of St Aloysius College Sixth Form for ‘Where the Tentacles Go’, second to Michael Mercieca of St Aloysius College Sixth Form for ‘Rooted in the Mediterranean’ and third to Milan Najdov of G.F. Abela Junior College for ‘Mean’. The project and its organisers are described at revisitingthemediterranean.eu.
