The Tree Trunk

Hollowed out, as full of black miasma
As a tea bowl; ants skittle around
Its ringless rim, while down below
The roots wash up from the ocean
Of land and life to which the tree
Once belonged.

On a nearby sapling,
In this all but fallen wood,
A bird of solitude
Re-arranges her feathers
Preparing them for inspection
By the dawn.
